5 things affecting your heart

These days cardiovascular diseases are becoming one of the major causes of death. One study showed that about 610.000 people die from cardiovascular problems in US, that’s 1 in every 4 people. The numbers are increasing each year. People are spending large amount of money for treatment of these diseases. Instead of giving away your savings for lifetime, try to change your lifestyle before the problem is even diagnosed.

In order to have a healthier heart and longer life, we advise you to avoid these 5 things:

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Processed foods
  • Too much animal products
  • Sedentary lifestyle

  1. Alcohol

-No one said that people shouldn’t drink alcohol, they should and they can, but in normal dosage. Having no more than 1 drink per day for women, and 2 per day for men is recommended by doctors. One drink is 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine and 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. Alcohol can be very harmful for our bodies. Consuming too much alcohol can lead to some serious issues with your heart.  Negative effects of alcohol include:

– Cardiomyopathy (diseases of the heart muscle)

-Heart failure

-High blood pressure

-High triglycerides

  1. Smoking

-Smoking can kill you. We all have seen this on cigarette labels, but it seems that people are not paying really attention to it. Well, it can really kill you. The statistics are showing that 1 out of 5 deaths from heart disease is directly related to smoking.  People who smoke are two to four times more likely to get heart disease.  Women who are on birth pills and smoke have even greater risk of getting a heart disease. The interesting thing is that not only people who smoke can be related to heart diseases from smoking. You’re asking how? Well, second handed smoking also can lead to cardiovascular problems, so the next time you smoke in front of your parents or kids or dear friends, thing about them and their health.

This is how smoking can affect your heart cardiovascular condition:

-Reduces how much oxygen is delivered to your heart

-Increases blood pressure

-Tachycardia (increasing of your heart rate)

-Harmful for your blood vessels

-It makes blood clots more likely, leading to heart attack or stroke

  1. Processed foods

-Please avoid these types of foods. They really shouldn’t be on your diet list. From time to time you can have them, but eating them on a daily basis will lead to serious health problems. These foods are loaded with salt (consuming too much salty food is detrimental for your heart), trans fats (the worst type of fat for people to consume, hardened with hydrogen saturation), MSG (monosodium glutamate) and other substances that are harmful for your heart and body. These substances can:

  • Increase your blood pressure
  • Increase LDL (known as “bad” cholesterol
  • Make you obese
  • Cause addiction (MSG)

  1. Too much animal products

-Be careful with these. They taste delicious, and they are part of our everyday diet. Especially pay attention to red meats and high-fat dairy products. Stick to some leaner options like chicken, turkey, and low-fat milk, yogurts, etc. Animal products are high in cholesterol saturated fats. Please read some of the previous articles about saturated fats and their effect on our bodies. Also keep an eye on how they are prepared. Avoid meats that are deep-fried or prepared with a lot of butter. When you cook always choose some quality vegetable oils like olive oil or canola oil. Decreasing the intake of fatty meats or sticking to vegetarian diet can keep your heart healthy instead of putting you in early grave.

  1. Sedentary lifestyle

– There is a very huge link between exercising, active lifestyle and health. Proper nutrition in combination with exercise and anti-stress methods like meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises is a key factor against health issues, especially cardiovascular diseases. The problem with most people is that they don’t move. As the years go by we are becoming lazier. We take our cars everywhere, we sit in our desks for hours, come back from home, and sit in front of the TV. We basically lost the desire for “living”. All of these factors above in combination with sedentary lifestyle are a deadly combination. Sedentary lifestyle is no joke, it can get you killed!
